On July 5th, I was pleasantly surprised to find him playing at the ‘All Fucking Good’ mini-music fest at the dive of all dives, Uncle Lou’s. I was there to check out A_Scissors, but seeing Nigel on the bill was a big bonus,like spotting a steaming gravy boat on the table next to a home cooked meal.

Gar was also in attendance, and in true form brought his video camera and his projector, and captured a little video mayhem. Here are the results:

The music industry gutted their own distribution chain, killed off the DJs that would introduce the masses to new music, forgot about the stars that got them where they are, and thought the huge jump in CD sales (sales by people replacing their LPs) would last forever. The lesson for independents labels and artists is clear: recreate the people connection that is missing from the major label’s machine and you will profit. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. And those savvy enough to utilize the social aspects of the internet will find that you may be more efficient then the old system ever was.

The new Radiohead video was made using a couple advanced technologies, and then they turned around and OPEN SOURCED the data and the code. The music is, sadly, still under copyright. Either way, I’m continuing to be impressed by the bold moves they are making, and the big waves they are surely creating in the music industry. Download the goodies here. This is a data viz nerd’s wet dream, and the remixes it can spawn are going to be INSANE - because the data itself is what you’re remixing with… creating endless varieties of a/v bad-ass-ery.

Here’s what they did:

No cameras or lights were used. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.

I live my life by thousands of ideas, so tis kinda hard to pin just one, proverbial tail on the donkey. Such is life for contemporary maximalists when nothing is safe and everything is sacred.

The concept behind the AirPiano is having a matrix in the air, with virtual keys & faders. The location of each key must be very clear for the user and easily learnt. The AirPiano is therefore only one example of an application that could adopt this concept. Since it is only the first prototype i built, it features at the moment a matrix with 3 layers, 8 keys for each layer. As long as a key is triggered, a note plays and an LED underneath the virtual key turns on…

The Beavis Board is a beginning electronics DIYer’s dream. US$249 buys you a full kit of everything you need to wire up your own guitar pedals, newbie-friendly – no soldering, no parts hunting, no … actual thinking required. Of course, what’s likewise wonderful about that is you can tool around with all different combinations. The crawl of possible circuit layouts reads like one of those infomercials. (Just look at everything you get! Best hits of the 80s! Air conditioner repair!)

A hardware hackers dream, the Coyote-1 Open Stomp is a plug and play reconfigurable effects pedal kit. alGARhythm is going to be all over this when it comes out.

Looks like the industry is starting to really pay attention to the laptop rockers. Now Korg is coming out with gear that you can easily port with your laptop from studio to gig and back. Slick and tiny, these look like an array of controls that any ableton junkie will get a lot of mileage with. Read more about it on Create Digital Music. Let’s just hope the price reflects the size. The lot of them shouldn’t go for more than $150.

Finally got my photos from the Meat Beat Manifesto show at the Social in Orlando on April 30, 2008 uploaded. Check ‘em out. The show, as usual, was amazing. This was the third or forth time I’ve seem them play live, and the show keeps getting better and better. Plus the new album totally smokes most of what I’ve heard in the dubstep genre, so check that shit out as well.
