“It’s altogether possible that *NSYNC’s first-week record will never be broken. Imagine if this boy band goes down in history not just for launching Justin Timberlake but also for marking the very peak of the hit bubble, the last bit of manufactured pop to use the twentieth century’s fine-tuned marketing machine to its fullest, before the gears were stripped and the wheels fell off.”
- Chris Anderson
– From The Long Tail
I finally picked up this book, and for everything I already knew about it; from the blog, and the original article in Wired - the main course (i.e. the book) has blown my mind on every one of the 32 pages that I have gotten to so far. Each passage has inspired me - whether to fire off emails to friends who are in niche businesses (like this one, or this one), or take notes for my own upcoming projects - and I can’t believe that this is just the beginning. I find myself applying the Long Tail framework to everything around me… including places I didn’t expect it to show up, such as spirituality and cross-comparative religious studies. The economies of abundance, one of the concepts from the book, will completely transform everything, including humanity itself.
