While the pic and the caption kick much ass, I think that the story itself as well as the insertion (no pun intended) of homosexuality into a childrens cult classic are of real social importance. Unlike other contemporary representatives of the homosexual community in the media, this has the effect of letting kids (the primary audience of the Potter books, though they are also read by many adults) know that homosexuality is not a shameful thing. Dumbledore as a character in both the books and the movies displays a strength of character and a level of integrity that is not quite the same as sitcom gays where stereotypes are blown far out of proportion to make the characters laughable as well as/in order to be acceptable. Here we have a respected authority figure engaged in only apparently responsible behavior while also being of an alternative sexual orientation. I think that this move by author JK Rowling is a step toward broader acceptance in this area as it will impact the minds of those who have perhaps not yet been exposed to social/religious/political stigmas associated with being different.

ha! that’s hilarious. however, i still don’t see how this is newsworthy. should i expect to see a report regarding Hotlips Houlihan from M*A*S*H preferring french manicures on the six o’clock news tonight? and if not, why not? it’s just as relevant to the story as dumbledore being gay.

of course, hotlips’ manicures don’t upset the anti-gay xians in this country, nor was M*A*S*H marketed as a children’s show. i understand why it’s considered newsworthy, i’m just annoyed that it is.
