Well it depends on the genre. I'm active on a number of Yahoo Groups dedicated to music. For electronic music, Hyperreal.org has a number of quality lists as well. Message boards are scattered far and wide across the internet, and shouldn't be too hard to find with a google search.

But to truly 'exploit' these avenues, you can't exploit them.... That is, you have to become a member of the community and then from there promote yourself and your music with a variety of passive techniques (such as Signature Files), or with just good old fashioned self-promotion ("Hey I've got this new album/project/track/etc.").

You just have to remember to keep the list/msg board signal to noise ratio in mind, and you should do just fine. Blatant spammig from a first time poster is likely to get you ignored big time.

Good luck. Glad you found the article enlightening.

Hi there - interesting comments on the Jupiter Research MySpace music research. Agree entirely that MySpace is just one of a hundred places any content owner - including music - should be promoting themselves.

In the music example though what "various message boards and mailing lists across the internet" and other community sites like Last FM would you recommend?

Best,
