Amazon’s new digital store has been launched and doesn’t employ any DRM technologies. This means that the music plays on any player. Yay! Freedom. Most files are $0.89, and albums are priced $4.99 - $9.00+. iTunes has some non-DRM files too, but only a portion of its catalogue, and at a premium price of $1.29. Amazon has them on bitrate too - besting them at 256kps.

In fact, the only thing that has been much of a quibble is that the MP3s are watermarked by Amazon, which only ID where they were purchased, not who purchased them. But I suspect that it will be trivial to strip out.

Good job, Bezos. You gave Apple the only thing they couldn’t compete with - an agenda not to just sell iPods - but every single player on the market. A bold stroke of genius. Very cunning of you.
