OMG: Independent Music Stores are actually growing?

Amobea Records San Franscisco

Whoa, after reading this article from the New Times in Broward-Palm Beach, maybe I should go give Park Ave CDs some love.

The article found that while most of the chains *cough*Tower Records*cough* are closing across the country, and some of the indie stores are succumbing to p2p and internet orders, there are quite a few from “Miami to Delray Beach” are holding on and even thriving and expanding. In fact, Radio-Active Records (formerly CD Collector) found an entire walled in back-room and opened up the space for more in-store concerts and events. Sounds a lot like what Orlando’s PACD just recently went through - expanding to include more live shows + shelf space. Life is good.

A record store should be a community center, a “cultural outpost” if you will. The ones surviving the internet age, are doing just that. So go show some love to your local, and buy a CD for a change. :)

  • Ah men to that brova!!

    knuckles - gaR

  • hell yeah! reckless records just opened a third store in chicago. tower has been gone since christmas, and virgin is on its way out.

reckless is thriving for the same reasons as park ave. and radio-active–they find shelf space for any kind of music out there, blast that mix on the PA, hold live events, and price their merchandise reasonably.

however, i’m pretty sure i’ll be waiting until after the honeymoon for my next visit…but that’s all right with me.

  • that’s great to hear, slobbert.

I don’t get to park ave as much as I should, and being on the other side of town doesn’t help. But I will try to hang out there more often.
